Sewing Tips

Faux fur may look intimidating at first, but with a few simple techniques, it’s surprisingly manageable. Here are our top tips for sewing faux fur successfully:

  • Check the nap: Faux fur has a direction, so mark the nap on your fabric pieces to ensure everything flows the same way once sewn.

  • Cut from the back: Turn the fabric over and cut from the knitted backing using a sharp blade or scissors to avoid damaging the fur.

  • Stabilise seamlines: Pin or stay-stitch your seamlines before cutting the fur to keep everything in place.

  • Use a strong needle: A denim needle (size 14/16) is ideal. Universal needles (100/16 or 110/18) also work well with polyester or polycotton thread.

  • Choose the right foot: A walking foot and longer stitches help the machine feed the fur evenly.

  • Free trapped fibres: Pull all fur fibres through the seams before trimming to prevent cutting into the pile.
